Dr. Leon Smith is Chairman of Medicine of Saint Michael's Medical Center and Seton Hall P.G. School of Medicine. He was Chief of Infectious Disease for 40 years. Dr. Smith is also Professor of Medicine and Preventive Medicine at New Jersey Medical School. He graduated with a BA from New York University and earned his MD from Georgetown University Medical School magna cum laude. He completed his internship at Georgetown University Hospital, his residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital and fellowship in Infectious Disease at Yale. He was also an Infectious Disease Fellow at the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Smith is board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease.
He is a past president of the National Foundation of Infectious Disease and has received many awards and distinctions including the Mastership of the American College of Physicians. He has published over 250 publications in infectious disease, and has written many chapters in infectious disease books.
Dr. Smith developed the first viral diagnostic lab in New Jersey, one of the largest H.I.V. and Hepatitis C clinics in the U.S. He also co-chairs the Bioterrorism Task Force for New Jersey.
