Dr. David Helfet is Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Weill Medical College of Cornell University and attending orthopedic surgeon and Chief of the Orthopedic Trauma Service at Hospital for Special Surgery/New York-Presbyterian Hospital. He graduated with honors from the University of Cape Town in South Africa with a B.S. in Biochemistry and earned his MD from the University of Cape Town Medical School. He completed his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Johns Hopkins University and fellowships in Trauma-Arthroplasty at the University of Bern in Switzerland and Sports Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Helfet is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.
He is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the Board of Trustees of the AO/ASIF Foundation and a member of the Orthopedic Trauma Association, in which he has been extensively involved, including as President (1998-1999).
Dr. Helfet has published and lectured extensively on orthopedic trauma and has been the recipient of many honors, awards and visiting lectureships including the Presidential Guest and Watson-Jones Memorial Lecture of the British Orthopedic Association in 1994.
