Dr. Derek LeRoith is the Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Bone Disease at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Before joining Mount Sinai, Dr. LeRoith held various positions at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. His last position with the NIH was as the Chief, Diabetes Branch (known previously as Clinical Endocrinology Branch). He oversees an interdisciplinary program involving clinical service, teaching, and endocrine research.
He received his medical degree and Ph.D. from University of Cape Town, he completed his post-graduate training in internal medicine and fellowship in endocrinology at the Groote Schuur Hospital, University of Cape Town and the Middlesex hospital in London.
Dr. LeRoith serves on the Board of Directors for the Endocrine Fellows Foundation and was Chair of the American Diabetes Association Research Grant Review Committee from 1998-1999. He has written over 500 peer-reviewed publications and has served on the Editorial Board of the following journals: The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, Growth Hormone and IGF Research, Diabetes/Metabolism Research and Reviews, Metabolic Syndrome and Related Disorders, Reviews in Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders, and Endocrine Clinics of North America.
