Dr. Jeffrey S. Borer is the Gladys and Roland Harriman Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at Weill Medical College of Cornell University, and is also Professor of Radiology and of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the same institution. Administratively, he is Chief, Division of Cardiovascular Pathophysiology, at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital-New York Weill Cornell Medical Center, and Director, The Howard Gilman Institute for Valvular Heart Diseases of Weill Medical College.
He received his undergraduate education at Harvard, his M.D. from Cornell, his post-graduate training in internal medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital, and subsequently spent seven years in the Cardiology Branch of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, where he established the Nuclear Cardiology service and served as its first Chief. Midway through this period, he was a Senior Fulbright-Hays Scholar and Glorney-Raisbeck Fellow in the Medical Sciences in 1974-75 at Guy's Hospital, University of London, in London, England.
Dr. Borer is immediate past-Chairman of the Cardio-Renal Advisory Committee of the USFDA, (having served three terms as Chairman during the past 27 years), where he continues as Consultant and Ad-hoc Advisor, and serves on the Biological and Physical Research Advisory Committee of NASA (former Chairman of the NASA-NIH Advisory Sub-Committee on Biomedical and Behavioral Research). He is Editor-in-Chief of Advances in Cardiology (Karger, Basle), and serves on the editorial boards of 10 peer-reviewed journals. He is currently President of the Heart Valve Society of America.
Dr. Borer has authored or co-authored almost 350 journal articles and book chapters as well as four books and has received multiple national and international awards and other recognitions. His major research achievements have included: (1) seminal work as part of an NIH team that established the benefits of nitroglycerin treatment during acute myocardial infarction; (2) development of real-time radionuclide cineangiography and its application during exercise; (3) development of prognostic indices, based on non-invasive testing, to inform treatment decisions in patients with coronary artery and valvular diseases; and (4) identification of primary fibrosis as a central process in the pathobiology of heart failure in regurgitant valvular diseases, and elucidation of its molecular biological basis.
