Dr. Scott Swanson is the Eugene W. Friedman Professor of Surgical Oncology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Chief of Thoracic Surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center. He graduated with a BA from Amherst College and earned his MD from Harvard Medical School. Dr. Swanson completed his internship and residency at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston. Dr. Swanson is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
He is a member of the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation, the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Association of Thoracic Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, the New England Surgical Society, the Boston Surgical Society, the New York Thoracic Society, the American College of Chest Physicians and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Dr. Swanson is also Executive Director of the General Thoracic Surgery Club. He is a reviewer for the New England Journal of Medicine, The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, and the Journal of Clinical Oncology and was named a Co-Editor of the 7th Edition of Sabiston & Spencer Surgery of the Chest.
Dr. Swanson is on the thoracic surgery committee for the NCI-sponsored cancer group, CALGB or Cancer and Leukemia Group B. Dr. Swanson's research centers on understanding the diagnosis and staging of cancer using biomarkers and genomic analysis as well as further developing and refining techniques for minimally invasive lung and esophageal surgery. He is co-investigator of a U.S. surgical grant examining the mechanisms of lung volume reduction surgery in a large animal model. Dr. Swanson's clinical focus is in the area of thoracic oncology including lung, esophageal and pleural malignancies of the mediastinum. He performs over 400 operations per year.
